JSCA Executive Director presents 2017 Annual Report to OAS Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs

Washington, March 28, 2018

  • In addition to congratulating JSCA for the work that it has developed in the region, the Committee agreed to hold another meeting in June with all of the missions in attendance to present and discuss specific issues addressed by the international agency in greater detail.
  • JSCA must replace two members of its Board of Directors at the 48th OAS General Assembly. The Executive Director invited member states to present female candidates at the next OAS General Assembly.


The Executive Director of the Justice Studies Center of the Americas (JSCA), Jaime Arellano, presented the Center’s Annual Report to the OAS Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs (CAJP) and invited OAS member states to present female candidates to the JSCA Board of Directors.

Event addresses the challenges associated with strengthening Mendoza’s criminal justice system

Mendoza, March 23, 2018

JSCA and the province’s Judicial Branch held a seminar on March 22, 2018.

Oral procedures, horizontal judicial organization and strategic planning for the Public Prosecutor’s Office were the topics addressed at the international seminar Strengthening the Adversarial Criminal Justice System held yesterday in Mendoza, Argentina. The event was organized by the Justice Studies Center of the Americas (JSCA) and the province’s Judicial Branch.


The activity was held at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo Law School and was attended by over 80 people who work on issues related to justice and who are interested in the province’s criminal procedure reform, which began in 1999. The focus on the program was a discussion of the key axes of a third generation adversarial system.

JSCA to provide technical assistance for the installation of a judicial office in Arequipa’s civil courts

Lima, March 23, 2018


JSCA will support the implementation of a judicial office that will take on administrative functions in some of Arequipa’s civil courts. JSCA Executive Director Jaime Arellano presented a plan to the Peruvian Supreme Court commission headed by Justice Francisco Távara.


Following the meeting, the timeline was agreed to so that a judicial office can be designed that will take on the administrative functions and hearing management of some of Arequipa’s civil courts. The meeting also included a discussion of the possibility of extending this pilot project to civil courts in Lima.

JSCA provides technical support for Haiti’s criminal justice reform


Santiago, March 22, 2018

    • A Haitian Judicial Branch Superior Council (CSPJ) delegation visited Santiago de Chile to learn about the Chilean criminal justice system.
    • Participants met with representatives of the Judicial Branch, Judicial Branch Administrative Corporation, Police Investigations and the Public Defender’s Office as well as guarantee judges and oral trial court judges.


A delegation from Haiti’s Judicial Branch Superior Council led by its Vice President, Windèle Coq Thélot, visited Santiago de Chile this week to learn about the criminal justice system. The activity was part of the US Agency for International Development’s Haiti Justice Sector Strengthening Program, which supports the professionalization, independence and efficiency of Haitian justice.

JSCA to Support Monitoring and Training of Civil Justice System Stakeholders in Nicaragua

Managua, March 14, 2018

JSCA will support the creation of a Civil Procedure Code (CPC) monitoring observatory in Nicaragua, which will celebrate the first anniversary of the code’s introduction in April. This and other actions were agreed to during the signing of a cooperation agreement between the international agency and the Supreme Court of Nicaragua.

The ceremony held yesterday in Managua was attended by Supreme Court Chief Justice Alba Luz Ramos; Supreme Court Civil Chamber President Ileana Pérez; Minister Rafael Solís; members of the Civil Procedure Code Implementation, Training and Monitoring Program; the Director of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Office, María Amanda Castellón; JSCA Research and Projects Director Marco Fandiño; and judges from the Nicaraguan capital.

Universidad Diego Portales and JSCA announce third Procedure Law Seedbed Competition

Santiago, March 13, 2018

  • The competition is open to law students from any school in Chile.
  • Registration for seedbeds is due on July 10, 2018.
  • The topic will be arbitration as a civil dispute resolution mechanism.

The Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) Law School and Justice Studies Center of the Americas (JSCA) have been organizing the Procedure Law Seedbed Competition since 2016. The activity allows law students from Chilean universities to analyze, critique and propose approaches to the relationship between the right to due process and non-criminal procedure reforms under the guidance of a professor. The third version of the competition, which is inspired by the International Seedbed Competition organized by the Colombian Procedure Law Institute, will focus on arbitration as a civil dispute resolution mechanism.

JSCA presents its Gender Equality Policy

 

  • JSCA is making a commitment and setting out a roadmap for the next four years in order to contribute to the promotion and construction of justice systems that allow for access to be provided without economic, racial, ethnic or gender differences.
    • The Gender Equality Policy was unanimously approved during last December’s meeting of the JSCA Board of Directors.

In honor of International Women’s Day, the Justice Studies Center of the Americas (JSCA) officially unveiled its Gender Equality Policy. The policy, which is the first institutional initiative of its kind, sets out a commitment and roadmap for the international agency for the next four years in this area. Through the design of the Gender Equality Policy, JSCA will contribute to the promotion and construction of justice systems that provide access to all without economic, racial, ethnic or gender differences.

The S5 Box can be demo'd by clicking on either the Login or Register buttons found towards the top of this page.

The module allows for up to 10 different S5 Box's on one page all via 10 module positions. You simply add a class to any HTML element on your site and enable the corresponding box and you are good to go!


To enable the login and register modules:

1. Install the S5 Box module and publish it to all pages on your site. Try to publish it to a position where a module already exists on all pages, but don't worry it won't change the layout of your site, the script is automatically hidden on your site.

2. Install and publish the S5 Register module to the 'register' module position

3. Publish the default Joomla login module to the 'login' module position.

4. In your template parameters area of Joomla you can change the text for login, register and logout.

5. That's it, you're all done!


If you do not wish to use the S5 Box but would still like to use the Login and Register links then simply complete step 4 above and also fill out your own custom urls just below those fields in the template configuration. Filling out the custom url fields will disable the S5 Box.

The S5 Box runs off of the core Joomla jquery/mootools libraries so there will be no conflicts with third party extensions or extra javascript files to download.

  • Up to 10 S5 Box's throughout your site or on any one page!
  • Set the percentage of width of each box according to overall screen size

Tutorial on how to get the s5 box working and use all 10 module positions it includes

1. Adding the S5 Box positions:

  • Open up the templateDetails.xml file included with the template you are using.
  • Locate the positions area.
  • Start adding new positions s5_box1, s5_box2, s5_box3, etc all the way up to s5_box10.

2. Adding the S5 Box classes:

  • The S5 Box class name of the corresponding position must be added to the link that will open the box. For example the following code will display a link that says Click Here and will open the S5 Box and display whatever module is published to the s5_box3 module position:



  • These classes can be added to any element, ie: divs, spans, etc., but the common use will be to add this into content with a link similar to the one shown in the picture above. To enter this link you must do so from the HTML edit screen on your content editor:

    Once you have clicked the HTML button the HTML code window will appear much like the first image.
  • You can continue adding these classes throughout your site just be sure to have published a module to the corresponding position or the box will not work correctly. So if you add the class s5box_two you will also have to publish a module to the s5_box2 position.
  • Module positions and their corresponding classes:

    s5_box1 = s5box_one
    s5_box2 = s5box_two
    s5_box3 = s5box_three
    s5_box4 = s5box_four
    s5_box5 = s5box_five
    s5_box6 = s5box_six
    s5_box7 = s5box_seven
    s5_box8 = s5box_eight
    s5_box9 = s5box_nine
    s5_box10 = s5box_ten

3. Lastly, publish your modules to the S5 Box positions:

  • Now that you have added the s5 box positions just go to your site modules area and publish modules to those positions
  • Make sure that you have added a class to an HTML element as described above or the s5 box will have no activation button
  • Also make sure to publish the actual s5 box to a non s5 box position, perhaps publish it to the "debug" position or a similar one in your template.

Main S5 Box Module Settings:

  • In the backend of the S5 Box module you can adjust the width of each box independent of each other.
  • Make sure that the S5 Box module is published to all pages, it can be published to any template position. Also make sure that the module opening in the box is published to the page the link is on.
